Rationale

·         What is the wider context of your project?

The origin of comedy: The first took shape in Megaris and Sicyon, whose people were noted for their coarse humor and sense of the ludicrous. http://www.theatrehistory.com/ancient/bates001.html

The history of comedy film: Ever since movies gained popularity in the early 1900s, filmmakers realized we love to laugh just as much as we love on-screen drama. Early comedy films were silent and relied upon the actors' talents with timing and physical theater to get a rise out of the viewers. As movie technology evolved, so did the comedy. http://movies.lovetoknow.com/wiki/History_of_Comedy_Films

                                                       Early history of comedy films
In fact, the very first film to be copyrighted in the United States, the five-second-long Fred Ott's Sneeze, is often described as a comedy. Because of limited technology, early films were silent and thus focused on visual humor, especially the slapstick style made popular by Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton. With the rise of sound in movies, comedy films could take their humor in new directions. Scriptwriters could incorporate jokes and craft complex situations that brought comedy to a whole new level. The Marx brothers were one of the first revolutionaries in the talking comedy film world, and their brand of fast-talking humor is still unique today. One of the first new styles that emerged with talkie films was the screwball comedy, illustrated brilliantly by the Three Stooges. Screwball comedies were short and featured over-the-top physical humor more common in cartoons of the day. Modern examples of screwball comedies include Roman Atkinson's Bean.
The later history of comedy films
The comedy film continued to evolve with popular entertainment, producing more sophisticated (and less-sophisticated) works in recent decades. In fact, movies such as Back to the Future and Monty Python and the Holy Grail have been voted as some of the funniest comedy movies of all time. The modern moviegoer can expect to find all kinds of comedy films in the video store or cinema. Every sub-genre is represented, from Charlie Chaplin's slapstick antics to the more sophisticated comedy. There's something available to make just about anyone laugh. http://movies.lovetoknow.com/wiki/History_of_Comedy_Films
The defination of comedy film: comedy film are "make 'em laugh" films designed to elicit laughter from the audience. Comedies are light-hearted dramas, crafted to amuse, entertain, and provoke enjoyment. The comedy genre humorously exaggerates the situation, the language, action, and characters. Comedies observe the deficiencies, foibles, and frustrations of life, providing merriment and a momentary escape from day-to-day life. They usually have happy endings, although the humor may have a serious or pessimistic side. http://www.filmsite.org/comedyfilms.html
The genre of comedy film:  Comedy of manners - A satire on the lifestyles of the social class. Dark comedy - Based on taboo subjects such as murder or war. Fish out of water - The main character finds himself in a strange environment, such as gender-swapping roles or a rural chap in the big city (Crocodile Dundee). Gross-out films - Another popular style of comedy film in recent years, these movies focus on toilet humor and are often aimed at younger audiences. Parodies and spoofs - One of the most common types of comedies, these films satirize other genres or classic films with sarcasm and mockery. Romantic comedy - A comedy centered around a developing relationship. Screwball comedy - Most popular in the early days of films, screwball comedies are the most difficult sub-genre to define. They usually involve wacky, almost unbelievable situations and include lots of physical humor. In addition to the above sub-genres, comedy is often merged with other types of film to produce sci-fi comedies, action comedies, and the like. http://movies.lovetoknow.com/wiki/History_of_Comedy_Films

l   How does the project relate to your previous experience/practice?

I learned drama before, so that I have some chances to act comedies. At that time, I fount that we need to use a vriety of elemences such as lighting, music and tempo of action if we want to get more greatly comic effect. Thus, I want to research this in order to create greatly comedy film.

·         How does it relate to relevant current practices, debates and theory?

Multiple typies of comedy films can produce laugh, however, there is a debate on nowadays what typies comedy films can be more attrictiveSo I need to start a questionnaire to this issue for contemporary. And then I will find out more effective ways to make comedy film.

·         Why is the intended research significant? (So what?)

This is because nowadays many people endure the stresses and strains of life. So that it is important for making happy for people. Moreover, comedy film can reflect active view of live.

·         How does this project relate to your plans for the future?

In the future, I want to produce my own low budget comedy film, especially family situation comedies.

PROJECT PROPOSAL PLAN 1

I wrote this before our class begaining, I found this homework in NTU website---COURSE INDUCTION. This is just my initial idea.

I would like to make feature film. Because a feature film mostly depends on development of realistic characters dealing with emotional themes. When I was in my university, I learned drama, so this area is my benefit.
I attempt to describe some ordinary people’s story especially some menial people which will become my subject. I like this because I like to reflect their realistic life and depicted their characteristics, which is we do not usually pay attention to find it. And meanwhile, some of their story can expose something, social phenomenon, the human nature of good or evil, for example. Although these sounds quite universal and familiar, actually there are all the perils by their activities.
I think these kind of film can reflect their real life and real feelings of these people. So that it is easily to arouse the emotion sympathy for audiences.
Firstly, I need find material, which story suit me to make film. And than I want to confirm the style of my film. And according to my understanding of this material, I will confirm what is I really want to express; What is this story’s purport; What is really important part in my film. I will emphasis on this when I am making my film. And next step, I think it is really important I will think how to present my film will be better. At first, I will make a shooting script. Think about a shooting plan. And then choose location and performer, prepare property...... Finally, editing my film.
